What You Need to Know About Hunger

When you reach for those afternoon snacks, are you starving?

Here's what you need to know about hunger so that you can control your appetite and manage your weight.

Hunger & Appetite

Physical hunger lets us know that our bodies need refueling.

Eating is a great joy in life, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, the strong desire to experience that pleasure causes many of us to eat when we're not hungry. This is your appetite.

How to Tell if You are Hungry

If you've lost touch with your body's signals, you might not be able to tell the difference between your appetite and hunger. Don't worry. You can learn. Here's how:

  • When you want to eat, don't give in immediately. Instead, check for signs of physical hunger, such as a gnawing pain in your stomach, or plummeting energy levels.
  • If you don't feel signs of hunger, wait to eat, and avoid tempting situations.
  • When hunger hits, take note of what it feels like. Try to remember this feeling for future reference.

Avoid Overeating

You must also listen to your body during your meal. Quickly stuffing food in your face will probably result in overeating.

So eat slowly and pay attention to how you feel. Instead of filling yourself until stuffed, stop eating when you are comfortably satisfied.

You should focus on each bite, and don't rush for the next one. This allows you to enjoy your meal and stay aware of your hunger level.

Learning how hunger feels will help you control your appetite. Although you might have to retrain yourself and break some difficult habits, the result will be worth it.
