5 Tips to Minimize Food Waste

Over a billion dollars in food is thrown away every year!

Today I'm going to give you five easy tips to minimize food waste.

Always Check Your Fridge First

One of the most important steps you can take to minimize food waste is to check your fridge before you do groceries or place an order for your next meal delivery.

So many times, we end up buying and ordering without consulting our fridges, and this leads to us buying extra items we don't need.
Before you place an order or go to the store, write down what you have in the fridge and what you need.

Keep Track of Your Garbage

Performing an at-home trash audit is a great way to get an idea of how much food you are wasting.

For a week or two, write down what you're disposing and how much of it.  Many restaurants (including OTR) have started to do this to help cut back on both food waste and spending. Why not take a tip from the professionals?

Plan Ahead and Prep Ahead

It can take some time to get in the swing of meal planning, but it's also one of the best ways to minimize food waste.

When you have a plan, you know precisely what to shop for and how much of it. Just make sure to keep the meal plans fresh, new and interesting. Otherwise, you might resort back to random eating.

Store Food Efficiently

Learning to store your foods efficiently is essential. Pick a container that is sized appropriately for your meals. Otherwise, any air that gets through will spoil your food quicker.

Learn Your Eating Habits

Lastly, it's crucial to understand your eating habits.  Keep track of how much food you eat and at what time. You'll get valuable insight into how to best to order or buy future meals and avoid food waste.

Food waste is something that too many people just let happen when they have the power to reduce their carbon footprint.

With these five tips, you can make an impact on your life and the planet.
